Position Title

Assessing the risk of foodborne pathogen contamination in fresh fruit and vegetable productions

Project

Consumption of fresh green vegetables and fruits is encouraged for their health benefits (Healthy Ireland Framework, Goal 1), providing consumers with vitamins, antioxidants and fibre. However, consumption of unprocessed fruit and vegetables that are cultivated in the open environment such as spinach and apples pose a potential risk through contamination by foodborne pathogens. A number of outbreaks and product recalls related to spinach and apples contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes and other foodborne pathogens have highlighted these potential risks. To date, limited knowledge exists on potential sources of contamination for fresh fruit and vegetables that are grown in the open field. Likewise, contamination of storage facilities could increase the risk of consumer exposure to life threatening illnesses such as listeriosis and haemorrhagic colitis.

Objectives:

Investigate the potential sources of apple and spinach contamination by Shigatoxigenic Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. on participating farms.

Conducting sampling campaigns in farm settings, utilizing cultivation dependent and independent methods for foodborne pathogen detection and characterization.

This 4-year PhD project is hosted by the University of Limerick, Department of Biological Sciences.

The project is part of a consortium with additional partners from Teagasc and UCD.

An evaluation of the Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme (SCHC) for deprived communities: A health equity-focused implementation science study, in conjunction with the Department of Health.

Project Summary
The School of Medicine and the Health Research Institute at the University of Limerick invite applications for an outstanding student to undertake a fully funded PhD. The researcher will join a team of interdisciplinary researchers and clinicians working on research in the areas of health inequalities, health services research and implementation science. This study uses a mixed methods approach to evaluate the impact of the SCHC amongst disadvantaged communities in Ireland.

The first stage of this study will involve undertaking a systematic review of existing research to understand the evidence for initiatives targeting disadvantaged communities. Secondly a mapping exercise will examine what initiatives are happening currently across Ireland. The researcher will then collect data via surveys and interviews with service providers and service users. These will report on the innovations in service delivery and any challenges faced by when delivering care, as well as the impact of SCHC on communities.

Overall, the study’s primary goal is to enhance knowledge about successful implementation strategies, that can improve how support services are delivered and ultimately reduce healthcare inequities within disadvantaged communities.

Development of a Core Outcome Set for cognition post-stroke.

Research Question

What core outcomes do patient, policy, healthcare and research stakeholders agree should be included in research studies wherein cognitive function is measured among people with stroke?

Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability worldwide. Cognitive impairment relates to challenges with memory, attention, language and perception and up to 38% of people demonstrate cognitive impairment one-year post-stroke. It is associated with poorer quality of life, reduced chance of survival, increased risk of institutionalisation, higher caregiver burden and increased costs. International consensus has highlighted it as an area of unmet need post-stroke.

However, there is a lack of agreement on ‘what to measure’ in studies addressing cognitive impairment post-stroke. This outcome heterogeneity has implications for reviewing research evidence and for generating policy implications. The development of a core outcome set (COS) is an established methodology to address issues with outcome heterogeneity in research.

Throughout this PhD the scholar and supervisors will work with people with stroke, their families, healthcare staff, researchers and other stakeholders to reach agreement on what outcomes should be measured in all studies measuring cognition after stroke.
