EHS Knowledge With Impact Lecture Series: Exploring safe and appropriate integrated care pathways for older adults seeking emergency care.

The fourth lecture in the Knowledge with Impact series took place on Thursday, April 25 2024 with a presentation by Rose Galvin, Professor in Physiotherapy, School of Allied Health, University of Limerick. Dr. Aileen Wright, Head of School of Allied Health, introduced Professor Galvin. Dr. Elaine Kinsella, Assistant Dean Research, facilitated a Q&A session after the presentations.

The title of Professor Galvin's lecture was Exploring safe and appropriate integrated care pathways for older adults seeking emergency care.

This lecture focused on how researchers at the Ageing Research Centre at UL have collaborated with older adults and family carers to address key uncertainties in the existing models of integrated care for older adults who attend the Emergency Department. This includes the identification of older adults at increased risk of poor outcomes following a visit to the ED through early and systematic screening, as well as targeted interventions to meet the health and social care needs of this group across transitions of care.

Professor Rose Galvin is a Professor in Physiotherapy at the School of Allied Health, University of Limerick. She has a long-standing interest in applied health research in ageing, reflecting her professional background in physiotherapy and her post-doctoral training in applied clinical epidemiology. She has published over 200 peer reviewed publications and has supervised almost 20 clinicians to PhD completion across allied health, nursing, medicine and pharmacy.

Rose is a recipient of a Health Research Board 2020 Research Leader Award exploring models of integrated care for older adults following discharge from the Emergency Department. She was Vice President of the Irish Gerontological Society (2019-2022) and is a founding member and co-director of the Ageing Research Centre at UL.
