We were delighted to award 13 successful applicants with the MELG Student Research Bursary Award 2020.  

These bursaries are designed to encourage students to engage in research and collaborate with clinical supervisors at each of our affiliated hospital sites. The bursaries are funded through the Medical Education Liaison Groups (MELG) in the five affiliated hospital sites.  

University Hospital Limerick; 

Michael Curran – Year 4 “Investigating the Impact of COVID-19 on Hip Fracture Management in a Tertiary Referral Hospital”, under the supervision of Dr. Jude Ryan.  

Susan Giblin –  Year 3 “Physical Activity in Children with Type 1 Diabetes: Importance, Empirical Evidence, Future Directions”, under the supervision of  Dr. Dervla Kelly. 

Firinna McKenna Beattie – Year 2 “A literature review for ULCAN and the UHL Lymphoma Clinic on the current evidence underpinning the recommended surveillance techniques and follow up protocols that are used for high-grade lymphomas”, under the supervision of Dr. Dervla Kelly. 

Sorcha Moore – Year 4 "The use of Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratio as a Prognostic Factor in Breast Cancer patients”, under the supervision of Professor Shona Tormey.  

Eabha O’Driscoll – Year 4 “A 6 Year Retrospective Study of Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Use in Ophthalmology”, under the supervision of Miss. Marie Hickey-Dwyer. 

Conor Walsh – Year 4 “The relationship between serum sodium levels and mortality in a large cohort of patients within the Irish health system”, under the supervision of Professor Austin Stack 

Midland University Hospital, Tullamore;  

Julie Clifford -  Year 4 “Outdated Terminology- the Terms “Direct” & “Indirect” Should no Longer be Utilised in Describing Groin Swelling”, under the supervision of Professor D.J. Hehir 

Bisola Salaja – Year 4 “Virtual Reality Operative Simulation in Orthopaedic Surgical Training During Periods of Restricted Clinical Hours: Systematic Review”, under the supervision of Mr. Khalid Merghani. 

Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe; 

Sean Killeen -  Year 3“Using a validated Palliative Care Competence Framework Questionnaire to analyse self-reported staff competence in providing palliative care to adults with life-limiting conditions and their families at Portiuncula University Hospital – Phase 2 “, under the supervision of Ms. Kathleen Cronin. 

St Luke's General Hospital, Kilkenny; 

Aisling Fiuza – Year 2 “Gluten immunogenic peptides (GIP) and their role in patients with Coeliac Disease”, under the supervision of Dr. Alfonso Rodríguez Herrera. 

South Tipperary General Hospital, Clonmel; 

Clare Grehan – Year 4 “Colonoscopy Best Practice, and Factors which influence patient experience of Pain, under the supervision of Professor O’Regan. 

Faye O’Donovan -  Year 4“GINA 2019; A Breath of Fresh Air in SABA Therapy”, under the supervision of Dr. Kenneth Bolger.
