In this week's Alumni Spotlight, we catch up with Permsap Munborirux, a graduate of the Masters of Engineering in Digital Mechatronic Engineering programme at University of Limerick. Since graduating, he has risen to the role of Senior Process and Equipment Engineer at EssilorLuxottica.
Originally from Bangkok, Permsap ventured abroad as an international student to pursue his studies at UL. He was drawn to UL for the project-based approach to this programme and the beautiful natural surroundings of the campus.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Permsap Munborirux, and I’m from Bangkok, Thailand. I work as a Senior Process and Equipment Engineer at EssilorLuxottica, the global leader in the design, manufacture, and distribution of ophthalmic lenses, frames, and sunglasses.
Why did you choose the Masters of Engineering in Digital Mechatronic Engineering programme at UL?
I wanted to gain exposure and establish industrial connections relevant to my coursework in European countries. I was seeking a project-based learning approach that incorporates on-the-job training and offers a range of options. Also, since the course was taught in English, I was able to adapt to the curriculum much quicker compared to other universities in Europe.
What did you enjoy most about the programme?
I loved this project-based course, as it allowed me to delve into real-world research and exploration, experiencing firsthand the expectations of the stakeholders and customers within the project on the course.
What did you enjoy about UL? What is student life like here?
The majority of people that I met during the course were incredibly cool and friendly. Especially the students in my course. The lifestyle in UL was pretty relaxed and close to nature, and the facilities have everything you need. Plus, you get to experience all four seasons in a single day!
Are there any campus locations that hold special significance for you?
A few places come to mind. First, the living bridge was a great spot to unwind; it gave me a different vibe during the day and night. Then, there’s the UL Arena. This facility has a nice swimming pool and a spacious gym to enjoy.
Were you a member of any clubs and societies? If so, tell us about your experience.
There are so many clubs and societies to join in UL, such as the International Society. It’s a great place to connect with fellow international students from various countries. All the activities and trips were so much fun, and I had a wonderful time throughout the year.
Tell me about your own career journey so far.
I have had a long journey in the automation industry, starting right after graduating with my Bachelor’s degree. Initially, I started off as a process engineer and gradually transitioned into the design work. After gaining experience in the field, I decided to enhance my skill set, which led me to pursue a master’s degree at UL.
Currently, I hold a position where I oversee projects as a project manager. My role includes everything from the design of the automation machine to the complete handover to the customer. It’s been a great journey that has allowed me to grow further.
How has your ME in Digital Mechatronic Engineering at UL contributed to your career?
During the project, I achieved one of my goals by enhancing my overall skill set. With my background in electrical engineering and my hobby in software programming, I have also been able to add mechanical skills to my profile because of this course.
What are your hopes and plans for the future?
I aspire to be a specialist further in this field and contribute my expertise to assist those in need.
The best life advice you’ve ever received is...
One of the best pieces of life advice I have received is “It’s never too late to learn." Whenever we encounter uncertainty or doubt, we have the opportunity to seek the answers and expand our understanding. It encourages continuous growth and development.
