Language Coaching in the Workplace [GA6172]

National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) Level 9

(12 weeks, part-time, online)

Programme Overview

This micro-credential has been developed to support the creation of a new practitioner role, that of Language Coach, in Ireland. This professional will be involved in providing formal language support for either Irish or English (as a Second or Other Language) in workplace settings. The Language Coach will scaffold language learning and help manage the apprehension often associated with using a language other than one’s first language in the professional context. By offering options

for staff to access Language Coaching, organisations can make language learning more practical and sustainable, whilst also developing language awareness within the organisational culture.

Who?

This professional development programme will suit anyone with an interest in supporting language learning and language use in the workplace or professional setting.

Why?

On successful completion of this course, the participant will be ready to consult with a language learner, or group of learners, about the development and evaluation of a professional development and individualised language improvement plan for the workplace setting.

What?

Some of the topics covered are: Advising in Language Learning (ALL), the skills of the Language

Coach, reflective practice, positive learning environments, and leadership and language advocacy. Participants can decide to specialise in Irish language or English (ESL/ESOL) coaching.

When?

The 12-week programme will commence online Wednesday 29 January 2025. A short induction programme will take place on campus also (with the option to join virtually). Date TBC, more than likely mid-late January 2025.
