This module is designed to nurture both good pedagogical practices and the specialist language competence required by the post-primary student teacher / teacher in the Immersion context in Ireland.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

This module will be of interest to students of education and qualified teachers interested in teaching their academic subjects, e.g. Physical Education, Music, Technology etc.  through the medium of Irish in the Immersion context, e.g. Gaelcholáiste, Aonad Lán-Ghaeilge and Scoil Ghaeltachta.

PROGRAMME CONTENT

The linguistic competencies required by the Immersion teacher in the Irish-medium / Gaeltacht context will be examined and advanced. Students will be prepared for Irish-medium interviews and the oral examination of the Teastas sa Ghaeilge do Mhúinteoirí Iar-bhunscoile. Students will develop their pedagogical expertise relating to the effective integration of language and academic content in the post-primary classroom.

PROGRAMME DELIVERY

Students will have the option to complete this module online in the Autumn semester or on campus in the Spring semester. The workshops will take place on Wednesday evenings.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The module will be taught through the medium of Irish. Ideally, students will have completed a proportion of their schooling through the medium of Irish and / or they will have attained a H1, H2 or H3 in Irish at Leaving Certificate Level.

ASSESSMENT

Students will be asked to create and develop a language and teaching e-portfolio. There will also be an oral assessment at the end of the module which will include a mock interview for a teaching post in the immersion sector. There will be no end of semester written examination. The module is graded on a pass / fail basis.

THE TEACHING COUNCIL

This module satisfies Option 2, e.g. one two-week block of the Teaching Council’s subject registration requirements relating to the Immersive Educational Experience for Irish. Note that this is subject to change.
