In 1946/1947 Operation Shamrock placed more than 400 German children in the care of Irish families. Most of them were suffering from hunger, illness and war-related trauma. While a majority returned to Germany after approximately three years, around 50 participants made Ireland their permanent home. Interviews with participants and Irish friends and family and analysis of documents and existing literature add to a more comprehensive understanding of the humanitarian initiative that is a major symbol of the friendship between Ireland and Germany (and even had repercussion with regard to language learning).
