Dr Alan Cusack Delivers Guest Address at ‘Vulnerable Accused in the Criminal Justice System Conference’ in Birmingham

Dr. Alan Cusack was invited to deliver an address at a landmark international conference, entitled ‘Vulnerable Accused in the Criminal Justice system Conference’ which took place at the University of Birmingham from 13-14 September 2023.

The conference was dedicated to a discussion of the unresolved issues that arise in the context of suspect/defendant/offender vulnerability and Dr. Cusack delivered a paper entitled ‘Protecting Vulnerable Suspects: A Survey of Existing and Emerging Pre-Trial Safeguards in Ireland’.

Other keynote speakers at the event included Professor Penny Cooper (Birkbeck), Professor Jonathan Doak (Nottingham Trent University), Professor Lore Mergaerts (KU Leuven), Professor Ray Bull (University of Derby), Dr. John Taggart (QUB). Bláithín O’Shea (University of Limerick) also delivered a fascinating paper entitled, ‘The Pains of Imprisonment for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities and the Potential of the Principle of Prison as a Last Resort’.
