Tuesday, 25 February 2025

Vanessa Blake, a graduate of the LLB in Law Plus, was recently featured on RTÉ News. Vanessa, who qualified as a solicitor in 2024, spoke to 40 Transition Year students from DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) schools at the Law Society's Solicitors of the Future at Blackhall Place in Dublin. Vanessa came to UL to study Law through the Higher Education Access Route (HEAR). Vanessa spoke of her belief in secondary school that Law not an option for her, however, following encouragement from her guidance counselors, she decided to apply via HEAR.

Vanessa stated: “You assume the points are too high and the school you go to might not have had a lot of students that would've gone in that path. No one in my family would’ve done that degree so for me to be the first was very scary”.

We at the School of Law are incredibly proud of Vanessa and hope her talk will encourage more DEIS students to consider studying law. She highlighted “the paths and supports that are out there” and the need for more diversity of background in law.

Vanessa was also supported by the Law Society Access Programme, more detail can found at this link: https://www.lawsociety.ie/about-us/Diversity-and-CSR/Access-Programme/
