As the CAO change of mind deadline looms, it is a wonderful time for our staff to visit secondary school students and bring a taste of law to those who may still be unsure of their path. Dr Luke Danagher, course director of our popular LLB Law Plus, and alumnus Kathleen Coll, now working in the School of Law as she works towards qualification, were happy to visit Castletroy College earlier this week.
Dr Danagher and Kathleen presented a factual scenario based on a real assignment that first years may take in one of their Plus classes, Media Law. The students got a sample of how the Constitution and European Convention of Human Rights influence a persons right to privacy and a good name, as well as legal protections for journalists and the legal balancing act of the free press versus a persons human rights. The question, while being a real assessment worth 50% of a module grade, is also designed to be an intuitive introduction in how to answer legal essays.
Afterwards, there was a student-led Q&A session covering everything from contact hours in a week to what books to read ahead of a law degree. Our staff contact, career guidance teacher Aedin O'Leary, tells us the students felt like they gained a unique insight into the courses on offer in UL and law as a discipline, which is always wonderful to hear.
