Report on Judicial Council Published

This week a report by UL School of Law's Dr Laura Cahillane and PhD researcher Saoirse Enright, along with NUIG's Dr Rónán Kennedy was published by the Irish Council for Civil Liberties. The Report arises from an IRC-funded project examining the structures put in place by the Judicial Council Act 2019 on judicial education and judicial conduct and ethics.

As part of the project, two seminars were held last autumn comprising papers from domestic and international experts on these topics, including speakers such as the Chief Justice, judges from the Netherlands and Canada. UL staff who participated included Dr Cahillane, who organised the seminars, Professor Paul McCutcheon, Dr Jennifer Schweppe, Dr Amanda Haynes, Dr Jane Mulcahy, and Saoirse Enright.

The Report makes various recommendations for action to be taken by the Judicial Council, the Government and Oireachtas.

A special edition of the Irish Judicial Studies Journal will shortly be published contained a selection of papers presented at the Seminars. The IJSJ is Ireland's only Scopus-indexed law journal and is produced by a team in the School of Law in UL.
