sex offenders in the community post release from prison
Tuesday, 25 February 2025

Dr Margaret Fitzgerald O’Reilly was invited on RTE Prime Time on Thursday 20th February to discuss monitoring of sex offenders in the community post release from prison. It has been 24 years since the introduction of the Sex Offenders Act 2001 which imposed post release obligations for persons convicted of sexually harmful behaviour. The effectiveness of the provisions under the legislation (and recent amendments in 2023) have not yet been empirically evaluated and the issue of management of offenders who continue to pose a risk to public safety remains a legitimate societal concern.
