Independent Learning Resources

The LLH has an extensive collection of textbooks, workbooks, and language guides that can assist with students’ Self-Directed Learning. We also have a variety of resources that students can use to improve specific areas of their target language, such as grammar, vocabulary, or specific contexts of use (e.g. language for business).

All course books that are used for teaching the language modules are available to consult in the LLH. We also have the accompanying CDs and audio resources. Students can borrow the material for one day at a time to help them complete their homework or independent study*.

You can also find material that will help you get to know the culture and society where your target language is spoken, for example magazines and comics.

There are also several dictionaries available for students to borrow for translating or to use in exams where online dictionaries are not allowed.

*Please be aware of the Copyright Licence document regarding photocopying of books and copying of audio files.

Films

Films are an entertaining way of improving language comprehension!

The LLH houses a large collection of classic and modern cinema in English, French, German, Irish, Japanese, and Spanish. Many of these films have subtitles in English or in the target language.

We also have a limited collection of silent films as well as some Italian, Swedish, Polish, Portuguese and Russian films. We are continuously adding new titles to our collection.

The full catalogues of films and documentaries available can be found in the LLH (LC1-008).

Individual Support Sessions

Students can book individual support meetings to learn about different tips & tricks that can help with their language learning. These meetings are specifically catered to the student’s target language and their individual language goals for the semester.

To avail of this one-to-one support, book a session with Catherine Jeanneau (email: catherine.jeanneau@ul.ie).

Book Club

Students are invited to swap books using our book club system.

At the end of each semester/ academic year, students can donate their used language textbooks and novels to us for the next cohort of students to use again. These donated books can be freely borrowed for as long as you need them.

We encourage students to leave another book in its place, if possible, or to return these books when they are finished with them so that as many students as possible can benefit from this service.

If you would like to donate any language books, you can drop them into our office in LC1-008.

Brightspace

UL students can also explore the LLH Brightspace page to support their independent language learning. Here, students will find hundreds of useful online resources that have been verified and approved by our team to assist with your language learning.
