AI in Language Education - Google Translation and ChatGPT - Lecture by Prof Antonie Alm (University of Otago)
Online Lecture - Tuesday 21st February 2023
Machine translation tools such as Google Translate and DeepL are widely used by language learners. How does the availability of a tool that instantly translates written and spoken language impact on the learning and assessment practices in our language classrooms? In this workshop, Antonie Alm will present the results of a recent survey on the use and perceived usefulness of machine translation tools for language learning.
Results indicate that many language teachers are not aware of the extent of machine translation use, and on the features they offer. While some students provided examples of innovative and responsible use of the tools, many also lacked awareness of their applicability for language learning. The workshop activities will provide participants with practical skills for machine translation use and facilitate a discussion on the appropriate use of machine translation in language education.
