First Prize Winner €300 – Dr Sinéad Connolly
Sinéad is a post-doctoral researcher at the Department of Chemical Sciences and Bernal Biomaterials Cluster. Sinéad hails from Skibbereen, she decided to enter the competition because she likes the challenge of bringing a smile to the reader’s face. She enjoys listening to music and watching too much Disney Channel.

Second Prize Winner €200 – Mariana Hugo Silva
Mariana is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie PhD Student at the Department of Chemical Sciences. Besides being a lab lover, she enjoys carrying out photosynthesis while reading a book, and is fascinated by outer space, particularly black holes.
Music is an integral part of Mariana’s life, she said “When I saw that music was one of the themes for the writing challenge, words and sentences came to my mind, I felt the need to write them down.”
Third Prize Winner €100 – Siobhán O’Connor
Siobhán is third year a PhD Student at the Department of Chemical Sciences and Bio Materials Cluster. She entered the writing challenge because she believes it is very important to be able to disseminate scientific research so that it can be understood by all. Writing the article helped Siobhán redefine her research goals and sparked a renewed interest in it, by forcing her to take a step backward.

The competition was judged by Bernal academic members: Dr Andreas Grabrucker, Department of Biological Sciences, Dr Shalini Singh, Dr Hugh Geaney, Department of Chemical Sciences, and David Tanner, School of Engineering.
