The legal name of the University is ‘University of Limerick’ and should be used on all legal documentation relating to the University.
University of Limerick (UL) (Ollscoil Luimnigh) is a public research university institution in Limerick, Ireland. Founded in 1972 as the National Institute for Higher Education, Limerick, it was established as a university in September 1989, in accordance with the University of Limerick Act 1989. It was the first university established since Irish independence in 1922.
The University of Limerick is a charitable body registered in Ireland under the Registered Charity Number CHY20009274, CHY20009274 incorporated under the Universities Acts, with its registered address at University of Limerick, Limerick, V94 T9PX, Ireland.
The University of Limerick operates under the aegis of the Universities Act, 1997 as amended by the Higher Education Authority Act 2022 (referred to as the 1997 Act). Overall authority for the affairs of the University is vested by the State in the Governing Authority of the University of Limerick.
