Don Shorten is a member of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland and holds a Professional Diploma from University College Dublin, as well as a BA and MA in Architecture from the University of Dundee. He was most recently awarded an MA in Business Management from the University of Limerick.
Don has also received professional qualifications from the RIAI as an Architect Accredited in Conservation at Grade 3 and as a Project Supervisor Design Phase. In addition, he has accreditation as a Certified Passive House Designer with the Passivhaus Institute.
As a Senior Executive Architect with Mayo County Council’s Architects Department, Don currently has responsibility for the design and delivery of social housing schemes and civic projects. He has extensive experience in both the public and private sectors; and has previously worked as a Project Architect with Limerick City and County Council, as well as private sector architectural practices in Limerick and Dublin.
During his career, Don has developed a diverse portfolio which spans several sectors. He has made substantial contributions to a variety of residential developments, energy retrofits, and conservation projects in historic town centres. His experience also extends to a range of commercial developments, in addition to projects in the education and health sectors. Furthermore, his current work on civic and community projects places a particular emphasis on public realm and placemaking.
