Edmond Magner is Professor of Electrochemistry in the Department of Chemical Sciences and a member of the Bernal Institute. He studied at University College Cork (B.Sc.), the University of Rochester (M.S., Ph.D.) and subsequently did post doctoral work at Imperial College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He worked at MediSense, Inc and Abbott Laboratories in Bedford, Massachusetts as a member of teams that developed electrochemical biosensors for glucose and hydroxybutyrate with combined sales of over $100 M per annum.
In 1997, he was appointed as a Lecturer at UL, served as Director of the Materials and Surface Science Institute (2003–2010) and as Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (2014–2019). His research examines the properties of enzymes at surfaces with a focus on using enzymes in biocatalysis, biosensors and biofuel cells. He has served on a range of external boards and committees, including professional societies such as the Bioelectrochemical Society, the International Society of Electrochemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry. He has been a member of the Governing Authority since November 2021
