The President’s Research Excellence and Impact Awards at the University of Limerick recognise staff who have made outstanding contributions in the excellence and impact of their research (beyond academia). Professor Ailish Hannigan, Professor of Biomedical Statistics in the School of Medicine, has been awarded the Research Output Award (Advanced category) for 2024 for her work on statistical methods to promote health equity. The research output was published in the International Journal for Equity in Health and was also selected as a Best Paper by the International Medical Informatics Association. The research focused on where and how information related to ethnicity is collected in the health information system in Ireland and what it has been used for. It was published in collaboration with academics in Ireland and the United States, and community organisations representing ethnic minorities. It has been used to inform policy and practice on the collecting of equality data and also led to a Health Research Board Secondary Data Analysis Project funding award. Professor Hannigan is a member of the Participatory Health Research (PHR) Unit in the School of Medicine, a World Health Collaborating Centre for PHR with refugees and migrants.
