    What we're Doing

Mungret Heritage Society is the umbrella organisation for a wider Steering Group which wants to promote and improve the area around Mungret using its natural, archaeological and historical resources to create a better environment for residents and visitors. It is now seeking to establish a visitor information centre. This project will link in with a new ambitious tourism initiative for the Shannon region. Creating and installing an indoor audio/visual - touch screen presentation of Mungret’s rich heritage for the benefit of the local community and for visitors

    Why are we doing it

Mungret Heritage Society in partnership with Limerick Christian Centre based in Mungret College strives to present and promote Mungret’s heritage. Key features are the former Jesuit Mungret College and the impressive Monastic Complex of churches over 1000 yrs. old. We would like to develop a visitor centre in Mungret College. We see it as the ideal location, regularly attracting past pupils. It also overlooks the splendid park and playground recently developed by Limerick City & County Council. The Monastic Complex is just a short walk away.

    Who we're working with

Mungret Heritage Society /Limerick Christian Community and Limerick City & County Council

    How well are we doing

We have the support of Limerick City & County Council. In partnership with the latter we have already installed a series of nine information panels around the Monastic Complex. A room near the café in the College has already been designated to house the display and function as a visitor centre. A key objective is to give community groups and organisations the opportunity to access resources in their local university. We support our community partners to effectively engage with faculty and students. Community members are provided with information and resources. Evaluation of their experiences of engaging with UL faculty and students and meeting project expectations is undertaking at specific timelines throughout the practicum. Community Evaluation of the project is designed into the project from start to finish. As part of their assessment, students present a briefing to their community partner setting out the outputs and outcomes of the project.

What will you do on this practicum?

We will engage in the development of visitor centre in Mungret College. Activities will include categorising historical information and photographs, designing and creating an audio-visual information presentation, designing the lay-out of an exhibition centre and producing information panels and brochures linking with existing initiatives

Why will you do this work?

This practical experience enables students to learn a range of technical and including the ability to layout information in a sequential and interesting manner, provide an artistically minded display to format and edit video and brochure content. You will engage in both independent as well as collaborative learning. You will learn from one another to reach creative solutions to practical problems. The module is designed to enable students to develop the capacity to apply curriculum-based knowledge in a real-world setting and self-assess and develop graduate attributes to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in collaboration with external community stake-holders. Students will also be supported to articulate their ideas to a range of audiences within different cultural frameworks and setting and be provided with opportunities to make substantial and positive contributions to society

Who will you be working with?

Practicum students undertaking this project will work with Mungret Heritage Society and Limerick Christian Community and peers from other international universities.

How will your work be evaluated?

Both formative and summative assessment methods will be used. Assessments will be designed to complement the interactive teaching and learning approaches. In particular, methods conducive to workplace assessment will be employed. These will include weekly reflection diaries, a group presentation, a reflective assignment and self-assessment activity. Students will be expected to produce a community briefing report and present their project outputs and outcomes to their community partner.
