The interaction between culture values and work values and economic development: A comparison between Mainland China and Germany
Since the beginning of China's economic reforms in 1978, China's economic development model has almost become a developing country's economic guide. Many of the studies analyzing
modern Chinese economic growth highlight the importance of culture (Kenneth, 1998; Franke et al, 2002; Chow and Li, 2002; Andreosso-O’Callaghan and Royall, 2013). On the side of Germany,
the economy of Germany is a highly developed social market economy. It has the largest national economy in Europe, the fourth-largest by nominal GDP in the world, and fifth by GDP (PPP). In
2017, the country accounted for 28% of the euro area economy according to the IMF. Thus, understanding global variations in culture value and work value therefore critical for the
development of economic (Srnka, 2004), especially from China and Germany.
Thus, my study will explore the relationships between the national culture, work value and economic development between two countries. It will based on the cultural dimensions theory of
Hofstede (Power Distance, Individualism, Uncertainty avoidance, Masculinity, Long term orientation) to analyse the culture value of Chinese and German; For the work value, it based on
O*NET Data (Achievement, independence, recognition, relationships, support and working conditions) to analyse the work value between China and Germany, and values of Per capita
gross domestic product (PCGDP) of China and Germany as a measure of economic development.
