LDCRC members Professor Aedin Culhane and Associate Professor Elizabeth Ryan recently participated in Limerick's Festival of Science Week, where they engaged with both primary and secondary school students by conducting interactive workshops that explored the fascinating world of DNA, using gummy bears and sweets to explain the secrets behind our DNA.
In addition, Professor Culhane served as the MC for Dr Edmund Gilbert rom the RCSI captivating talk on the Irish genetic landscape. Dr Gilbert delved into the intriguing history of Irish migration and its lasting impact on the global genetic makeup.
Dr Cliona Ryan from Teagasc also gave a fascinating talk "Tinder for Cows" to some eager Leaving Cert agricultural science students where she discussed how by leveraging genetic information, farmers can identify compatible pairings within their herds
This collaboration between the LDCRC and University of Limerick's Science Week provided a valuable opportunity for young learners to gain insights into the complexities of genetics and the rich heritage of Irish ancestry.
