New tutor Session

  • Describe the format and methods of delivery of clinical skills teaching sessions
  • Understand the principles of communication skills teaching including the principles of feedback
  • Define briefly the role of the simulated patient in teaching sessions
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the role of the tutor

General session

  • For new tutors to meet established tutors
  • For all tutors to review use of simulators/ manikins used in teaching sessions in Semester 1
  • For tutors to share experiences of troubleshooting equipment
  • For tutors to share experiences of common difficulties encountered by students
  • For established tutors to share experiences in teaching communication skills to School of Medicine students

  • To introduce and provide the evidence base for using SAQs in medical education
  • To explain how an integrated SAQ can be composed
  • To demonstrate the process involved in formulating a SAQ
  • To give the participants the opportunity (whilst) working in small groups to compose SAQs
  • To help participants develop an understanding of the need to develop integrated SAQs that test understanding and deep knowledge

Learning Objectives/Aims

This package of workshops will provide a basic but comprehensive foundation on aspects of clinical teaching. 

Elements of the workshops will include:

  • Modern principles and concepts in Clinical Teaching
  • Effective Small-Group Clinical Teaching
  • Effective Large-Group Clinical Teaching
  • Effective Bed-Side Clinical Teaching.
  • Effective Student Assessment and Self-Evaluation
  • Effective Feedback Provision.

Specifically it is expected that participants will achieve the following objectives:

  • Identify opportunities for teaching and enabling learning in everyday clinical practice
  • Apply some of the major modern medical education theories of learning & teaching to their own teaching practice
  • Utilise a wider range of teaching methods with students and trainees
  • Develop a reflective approach to teaching and learning which you can by utilise in their own continuing professional development

Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Learning Teaching and Assessment in Higher Education

The Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Teaching, Learning & Assessment in Higher Education is a 30 ECTS one-year, part-time programme.

It is recognised at UL as a continuing professional development (CPD) activity enabling participants to evidence teaching excellence.

It aims to enhance the professional practice of those who teach in higher education by providing high-level, scholarly, and practice-based professional development to develop expertise in teaching, learning and assessment. It will equip participants with a range of skills, competencies, insights and capacities to bring the highest quality teaching, learning and assessment experiences to their students, while also managing and progressing their own scholarly careers.

The programme has a focus on engagement in best practice in teaching, learning and assessment and application of theory. It includes exploration of teaching identity, teaching philosophy, learning theories and their application to inclusive curriculum design in online, blended and in-person learning environments. It also supports critical reflection on practice as part of a community of scholars to encourage a lifelong commitment to continuing professional development.

The PGCert is taught over two semesters (Autumn to Spring).

On completion, participants can progress towards:

  • A PGDip* in Learning Teaching and Assessment in Higher Education qualification (an additional 30 ECTs in Year 2 for 60 ECTS total) and a
  • MA* in Learning Teaching and Assessment in Higher Education qualification (an additional 30 ECTs in Year 3 for 90 ECTS total).

NB The latter two courses are currently under development (Spring 2024) and are subject to approval by APRC and Academic Council.
