As the autumn leaves begin to fall and the crisp air sets in, the University of Limerick (UL) is set to welcome a new wave of over 1500 international students for the academic year 2024/2025 in just under 2 weeks. This marks the beginning of an exciting journey for students from all corners of the globe, who bring with them diverse cultures, perspectives, and aspirations. The vibrant campus, renowned for its academic excellence and picturesque setting, is ready to offer these students a unique and enriching experience.

The University of Limerick: An Overview

Nestled along the banks of the River Shannon, UL is celebrated for its innovative approach to education, cutting-edge research, and strong ties with industry. The university boasts a sprawling campus, state-of-the-art facilities, and a welcoming community that fosters both academic and personal growth. Known for its commitment to student success, UL provides a supportive environment that helps students navigate their academic journey and beyond.

Preparing for Arrival

For many international students, the journey to UL begins long before they step foot on Irish soil. Preparation involves securing visas, arranging accommodation, and familiarizing themselves with the cultural and academic environment. UL Global plays a pivotal role in this process, offering guidance and support to ensure a smooth transition – with themed ‘Countdown Emails’ coming up to Orientation. From pre-arrival webinars to detailed handbooks and dedicated staff for Erasmus, Exchange, Study Abroad and students doing their full degree here. UL Global ensures that students are well-prepared for their new adventure.

Orientation and Integration

UL Global Orientation is designed to help international students acclimatise to their new surroundings and feel at home. Their orientation includes campus tours, academic advising sessions, and social events, all aimed at building a sense of community and belonging. This year we have events and activities planned in the new space “The Globe” which is run by the Global Student Engagement team.

Orientation events such as Speed Friending, Go Gaelic, Taste of Irish, a Trad Night in the Stables campus bar, and a shopping trip to the Parkway Shopping Centre will provide students with a well-rounded experience to get used to life in Limerick and meet their peers.

Finally, to top off the week, it will end with our traditional performance by the Celtic Steps to combine the raw energy of popular Irish Dance and authentic traditional Irish Music. After which students are welcome to attend their first ‘International Night’ which is hosted by the Stables bar every Friday during semester time.

Academic Excellence

UL is renowned for its diverse range of programmes and commitment to academic excellence. International students can choose from a wide array of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, spanning disciplines such as engineering, business, arts & humanities, and sciences. The university’s emphasis on experiential learning, including co-op placements and research opportunities, ensures that students gain practical skills and experience alongside their academic studies.

Embracing Irish Culture

One of the highlights of studying at UL is the opportunity to immerse oneself in Irish culture. From traditional music sessions at local pubs to exploring the stunning landscapes of the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland offers a rich cultural experience, especially the West. UL encourages students to engage with the local community and participate in cultural events, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Irish heritage.

One small example of embracing Irish culture while at UL is the Milk Market which is hosted in Limerick city centre every Saturday 8am to 3pm where visitors can enjoy local and international cuisine, delicious tea and coffee, art and crafts by local artists, second-hand clothing and so much more.

Another option is to join the many sightseeing tours that leave from campus every weekend. Full information on these tours can be found in Countdown email 6.

Support Systems

Recognising the challenges that come with studying abroad, UL offers a robust support system to assist international students. The Student Health Centre, Chaplaincy and Counselling Services, and Academic Support Services (such as the learning centres, the Regional Writing Centre, First 7 Weeks and more) are all available to help students navigate any difficulties they may encounter during their time in UL. UL Global also has a dedicated Student Engagement team which students can come to for support as well as hosting ‘Wellness Wednesdays’ in The Globe with themes targeted at wellness, mindfulness, and overall well-being and are a great way to meet new friends.

Building a Global Network

Studying at UL offers international students the chance to build a global network of friends and professional contacts. The diverse student body, combined with the university’s strong connections with industry and academia, provides ample opportunities for networking and collaboration. These connections can be invaluable as students' progress in their careers and personal lives. UL Global hosts two programmes – the Buddy Programme and the Student Ambassador Programme.

The Buddy Programme aims to link a current student with an incoming student to help them acclimate to UL life. The Ambassador programme is targeted towards creating content for the UL Global social media pages but has been boasted for being a great way to meet new people, make friends, and network as the programme gives students the opportunity to attend various events hosted by the university and/or its partners as well as participate in promotional video and photoshoots organised by UL Global.

Looking Ahead

As the new academic year unfolds, the University of Limerick is excited to see the contributions and achievements of its international students. Their presence enriches the university community, bringing new ideas and perspectives that enhance the educational experience for all. UL remains committed to providing a supportive and inspiring environment where students can thrive and achieve their full potential.
