Thenuga Thevapalan presents a concert performance of Karṇāṭak music in Trichy, South India, where she is currently carrying out fieldwork and studying with her guru, Karaikudi Subramanian. Thenuga plays the South Indian stringed instrument known as the vīṇā and in this concert she explores the repertoire of the Kāraikuḍi vīṇā tradition. She is joined by her guru, Karaikudi Subramanian, mṛdaṅgam artist Arun Prakash Krishnan, and Subramanian’s disciples: Srikumar Karaikudi Subramanian, Mathuriga Thevapalan, Veera Raagavan Srinivas and Sriram Srinivas. The performance highlights the close bond between the guru and disciple – a relationship that often extends beyond teaching and music, as students become deeply integrated into the daily life of their guru and integral to the guru’s performance practice. The event will be documented through videography and subsequently streamed for online viewing.
