Venue: Theatre 1, Irish World Academy, University of Limerick
Followed by reception at 8pm.
As part of the Irish World Academy's 30th Anniversary legacy initiative, we are proud to announce the newly created Irish World Academy Artist Series.
The inaugural event in this series of intimate, one-off performances features songs and stories by Academy artist-in-residence, Rhiannon Giddens.
Rhiannon Giddens has made a singular, iconic career out of stretching her brand of folk music, with its miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities, into just about every field imaginable. A two-time GRAMMY Award-winning singer and multi-instrumentalist, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient, Pulitzer Prize winner, and composer of opera, ballet, and film, Giddens has centred her work around the mission of lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased, and advocating for a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins through art.
A seat at the event can be reserved by making a donation of €125 to the UL Foundation: https://ulfoundation.com/donate-now/donate-in-euro/ with a limited number of seats reserved for students and community partners. The artist has kindly waived her fee so that all proceeds from this event can go to the Academy Stepping Stones scholarships. These scholarships support students from culturally-rich but economically challenged contexts to pursue postgraduate study at the Irish World Academy.
