Chair - Dr Kathleen Turner
In this seminar Hilary Moss will briefly outline a new edited book (in press) entitled The Role of Music in Health and Wellbeing Journeys, which foregrounds narratives by people receiving health and social care who have found that music helps their health and wellbeing. Dave Camlin will present his reflections on the book’s themes, highlighting music making as the ‘performance’ of ethically-guided humanistic values – love, reciprocity and democratic equality – which are animated through the activity, and the implications of this for those participating. What does it mean to be a ‘healthy public? What are we going to do with our health once we’ve recovered it? If music is a resource for human flourishing, how do community musicians and music therapists put it to service in these times of great uncertainty, and to what purpose? Kathleen Turner and Tríona McCaffrey will respond to this work from their perspectives as Community Musician and Music Therapist, before facilitating a broader discussion.
