Tuesday, 19 December 2017

UL President Dr Des Fitzgerald has established a new Christmas giving tradition at the University of Limerick inviting members of the staff and student community to nominate local charities to be in receipt of a Christmas donation by the University.

The 20 most proposed charities today received cheques for €1,000 each at a UL Christmas Community Celebration with funding provided by the University and the UL Foundation.

Speaking about the initiative Dr Fitzgerald said: “Christmas is a particularly demanding time for many charities, as they are often the only lifeline for projects such as those supporting the elderly and the homeless and the demands can be even greater at this time of year.  We were heartened to receive a large number of nominations from the campus community. In total, over 300 of our community submitted nominations for 53 charities.”

“It is my hope that for Christmas 2018, we will extend the voting to our Alumni as well, so that we may involve them in this outreach initiative and also support projects in which our alumni are active,” continued Dr Fitzgerald.
