University of Limerick academic and poet Eoin Devereux is to headline the First Wednesday series in March, it has been announced.

The First Wednesday Series, being held in partnership with Poetry Ireland, has announced that Professor Eoin Devereux will be the featured reader for its event at The White House Bar, Limerick, on Wednesday, 5 March.

Internationally published, Professor Devereux brings a wealth of literary and academic experience to the series. He currently teaches on UL’s MA in Creative Writing program, specializing in community engagement through his modules on ‘Creative Writers in The Community’.

A distinguished poet, Professor Devereux’s work has appeared in leading publications including The Irish Times, Janus Literary Magazine, The Stony Thursday Book, and Southwords.

His commitment to the local literary scene was highlighted through his curation of the poetry broadsheet ‘April Is The Cruellest Month’ for National Poetry Day 2022. His most recently published poem ‘Pravda’ was shortlisted for the 2024 An Post Irish Book Awards New Poetry Category.

Professor Devereux’s work has focused on working class experiences and he is seen as a quintessentially political poet. Landscapes in Wexford and Limerick strongly feature as the settings for his poetry.

The historic White House Bar, long associated with Limerick’s rich poetic tradition, will host the evening's proceedings. The event will also feature an open-mic session, continuing the series’ tradition of discovering and nurturing new voices in poetry.
