My name is Padraig, and I am currently studying the MSc in Human Resource Management at the University of Limerick.
What made me choose to study my postgraduate degree at UL
There were many reasons why I decided to undertake a postgraduate degree at UL. Having grown up in the locality, I’ve always admired the University’s stunning campus. I was eager to become a student of the Kemmy Business School due to its renowned AACSB accreditation and reputation with employers. I wanted to finish my postgrad well-equipped to navigate the highly competitive job market that’s out there, so during my comparison of postgrad programmes on offer by various universities, I was impressed by the consistent employability rate of UL’s graduates. It was all these reasons that made UL the perfect choice for me to continue my studies in both a knowledge-enriching and stimulating environment.
Finding the right postgraduate course for me
After carefully looking into the UL postgraduate prospectus, I found that many of the postgraduate programmes offered can be completed full time or part time. This entirely depends on the needs of applicants, but I thought it was great to have that choice available. I was delighted to have been awarded a KBS scholarship for my postgrad, so I decided to undertake a full-time programme as I could study without that financial worry.
I decided to pursue the MSc in Human Resource Management (HRM) specifically, after becoming very interested in the area during my undergraduate studies at Limerick Institute of Technology, where I had covered many HR modules. The HRM programme offers a wide variety of compelling modules that incorporate the latest trends and insights into the ever-changing HRM environment.
The Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management offered plenty of practical opportunities to work collaboratively with students from different disciplines and cultures from all around the world, which I think is crucial now that diverse workforces within organisations are becoming more established. The programme has really helped me develop the relevant transferable skills needed to excel in my postgraduate career. The course facilitates the use of initiative, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to tackle complex issues found in lecture materials and group exercises. Independently managing a research project requires a huge commitment and, in doing so, put all these skills to the test.
The importance of engaging with student life and supports at UL
I had the privilege of being a part of several volunteer projects and UL clubs during my postgraduate studies which provided me with a good platform to network with an amazing group of UL students. I became a team member of ‘UL Film Society’ and ‘Are UL?’ - a Movember campaign which raised funds for men’s mental health. I also took on the opportunity of becoming the full-time class representative for my programme. This helped build upon my existing skillset while also developing my ability to communicate, negotiate and lead effectively in solving class queries with lecturers.
I feel very fortunate that UL have supported me throughout my studies, keeping us up to date with the various student services on offer. ‘The Writing Centre’ is available to us for any academic help we need, and we’re also made aware of the mental health support offered by the counselling service within UL, which I think is important for any students struggling with the pressures of online learning during the pandemic.
How my HR Master’s Degree is preparing me for life after college
Interaction with the Careers Division formed an integral part of my ‘Personal Development’ module. All our assignments for this module are tailored towards participation in the UL Careers Fair which offers multiple opportunities to speak with reputable employers about graduate jobs and do mock interviews. The module offers CV feedback and career guidance expertise from experienced career advisors which helps postgraduates to feel fully equipped and confident in applying for graduate jobs.
How my postgraduate course at UL helped me grow
Becoming a UL student has very much helped me grow as a person. I feel more self-assured in my abilities now that I have taken the leap out of my, sometimes-ironclad, comfort zone, and participated in new activities, which I wouldn’t have dreamt of doing beforehand due to a lack of confidence. This Master's degree has enriched my career prospects hugely as I now feel more confident in applying for my dream job as a HR administrator/generalist in a large business-orientated company in Limerick City. This would not be possible without the support UL has given me. They have helped me elevate my CV to an extremely high standard by giving me opportunities to obtain new certifications in both volunteer work and extra-curricular course activities.
Overall, I completely stand by my decision to undertake my Master’s degree in UL. It has bolstered my job prospects tenfold and provided me with a range of transferable skills that no doubt will aid my personal and professional growth for the foreseeable future.
