Brief Description
This is a one-year, part-time course at certificate level. The course will consist of a survey of art and architecture studied in the context of the ambient culture. It will be worth a total of 24 credits on the ECTS scale.
On completing the course a participant will have acquired the ability to:
• describe and identify the essential artistic and technical characteristics of significant and exemplary works.
• set works of painting, sculpture or architecture into their broader historical and cultural contexts.
• acquire detailed knowledge of specific themes in art history through independent research.
The course will be delivered through lectures and discussion every Tuesday evening during the Autumn and Spring semesters.
Study visits to art galleries, and first-hand contact with relevant works will be encouraged.
A sympathetic academic environment will be provided by the course lecturers who will offer guidance and advice in appropriate research and study skills.
- HI2001 Research Skills and Writing in Art History (6 credits)
- HI2011 Art and design of the medieval and early modern worlds (6 credits)
- HI2002 European Art and Architecture since 1700 (6 credits)
- HI2022 Art and Architecture in Ireland during the Modern Era (6 credits)
Applicants are invited from mature students (in general 23 years of age on the 1st January of the year of registration). Each mature student is considered on an individual basis whose academic qualifications, work experience, motivation and overall potential for the programme are evaluated.

- Photo or Scanned original copy of your transcripts for all years of study. (Graduates of UL need only provide us with their Student ID number)
- A copy of your birth cert or passport
- A copy of your most recent CV
- If your qualifications have been obtained in a country where English is an official language this will suffice
- If this is not available, the following additional documents must be provided:
- English translation of your qualification(s)/transcripts AND
- English language competency certificate
