My name is Ryan, and I am currently studying the MSc in Civil Engineering at the University of Limerick. I completed my undergraduate in Civil Engineering at University of Limerick and thoroughly enjoyed my time learning all aspects of Civil Engineering. Choosing to further my studies by doing an MSc was a no brainer in the sense that it allowed me to further enhance my skillset and study new areas related to Civil Engineering while also increasing my employability prospects.

I had looked into undertaking postgraduate courses in other universities, however, given how much I enjoyed my undergraduate study, and how good a reputation the University of Limerick has with employers, it was clear that furthering my studies at UL was the best option for me.

How my Civil Engineering Masters allows me to expand my knowledge

The great thing about the MSc in Civil Engineering is that it allows previous subjects undertaken at undergraduate level to be studied in much further detail. Undertaking modules such as Advanced Structures and Advanced Geotechnical Engineering were very useful in showcasing why the knowledge we have learnt is so useful, and how it can be very beneficial when working as a civil engineer.

Being able to carry out a dissertation is a very big factor of why the MSc is such a great course to choose. For my dissertation, I am investigating the effect that micro-sitting has on windfarms. The dissertation allows you to carry out in-depth research into a topic that you have a big interest in. This makes it very enjoyable while also improving your employment prospects in the area you are researching.

Developing my skills and mastering new software in my Master’s degree

The skills I developed while undertaking this civil engineering master’s degree have been endless. A lot of work in Civil Engineering involves the use of different software, carrying out report writing and being able to present your work. The course really focuses in on these areas. Most of the assignments carried out are based in a report style format.
This is very beneficial as it gives you the skills and confidence necessary for working in the industry. Doing presentations on our work is another big part of the modules. Being able to present the work in front of both the class and the lecturer really helps in building confidence and increasing your knowledge of certain subjects, by being able to explain your work to someone else.

Learning how to use software packages such as ‘Robot’ and ‘Rhino’ is a significant bonus of the course. Having the knowledge of how design software works is a great asset for anyone looking to work for a design consultancy. The course is exceptionally good at helping to improve your problem-solving skills. The Master’s degree has really given me the confidence I need to tackle any problem I will face when working in the industry.

Gaining valuable experience for my career and CV

During the course, we received several presentations from companies who are seeking to recruit graduates. These presentations were organised by the lecturers. It was very useful as it gave a clear sense of the work being carried out by these companies and what was required of us as graduate Civil Engineers. In terms of volunteering, I am currently part of a fundraiser for Animal Shelters in Ireland. It is a great feeling to know that you are helping to improve the world and being able to showcase this extra line on your CV.

How UL has supported me through my civil engineering master’s degree

UL offers many great services to postgraduate students. One that I have taken advantage of is the UL Careers Division. I took part in two CV clinics and a mock interview. I found them to be very useful as it was an area I had little knowledge of, so being able to produce a high-quality CV was hugely beneficial to me.

The CV clinics showed me how to alter my CV depending on the companies I’m applying to and highlighted the key areas that I needed to focus on. Carrying out an interview was another beneficial exercise as it was an area I had not much experience in. Personally, I have found the UL Careers Division to be a great help with preparing me for the working world.

How my Master’s degree has prepared me for my future career in engineering

UL has really created a future of endless possibilities for me. This course has helped me to come out of my comfort zone and I’ve gained a lot more confidence about facing the working world. In terms of career prospects, there are lots of opportunities available to us.

The big advantage of this course is that there are so many areas that graduates can work in, whether it be on a construction site, working with renewable energy or designing structures. My ambition for the future will be to work with a design consultancy specialising in either renewable energy or structures.
