The advent of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) marks a transformative era in technology, where the physical and digital worlds converge. These innovations are driving the next industrial revolution, often referred to as Industry 4.0. CPS and IoT technologies are not only pivotal in manufacturing and engineering but are also revolutionizing sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, transportation, and urban development. As these technologies proliferate, there is a growing demand for professionals who understand their principles, applications, and implications.
This module is designed to address this demand by providing a comprehensive introduction to CPS and IoT. It aims to equip students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to navigate and contribute to this dynamic field. By bridging the gap between technical and non-technical disciplines, this course fosters interdisciplinary understanding and collaboration, essential for the successful implementation and innovation of CPS and IoT solutions.
The primary purpose of this module is to provide students with a robust understanding of Cyber-Physical Systems and the Internet of Things, focusing on their concepts, technologies, applications, and societal impacts. This module will serve as a foundational introductory course for those looking to specialize further in these areas or integrate these technologies into their existing fields of expertise.
Specific objectives of the module include:
- Fundamental Understanding: Introduce the core concepts of CPS and IoT, including their architectures, components, and functionalities. Students will learn how these systems integrate physical processes with computational resources and networking capabilities.
- Technological Competence: Familiarize students with the essential technologies underpinning CPS and IoT, such as sensors, actuators, embedded systems, communication protocols, data analytics, and cloud computing. Practical lectures in second half of the course will enhance their confidence in working with these technologies.
- Interdisciplinary Integration: Highlight the interdisciplinary nature of CPS and IoT, demonstrating how these systems can be applied across various sectors including manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, smart cities, and environmental monitoring. Case studies will illustrate real-world applications and innovations.
- Critical Analysis: Encourage students to critically analyse the challenges and opportunities presented by CPS and IoT. Discussions will cover topics such as cybersecurity, data privacy, ethical considerations, and the socio-economic impacts of these technologies.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Develop problem-solving and project management skills through hands-on assignments and presentations of their project work. Students will work on designing, implementing, and evaluating CPS and IoT solutions, fostering creativity.
- Future Trends: Provide insights into the future directions of CPS and IoT, including emerging trends, research developments, and potential career paths. This will help students to stay informed and prepared for advancements in the field.
By the end of this course, students will have a well-rounded understanding of Cyber-Physical Systems and the Internet of Things, enabling them to contribute effectively to their development and application in various professional contexts. This course aims prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Applicants should have a first or second-class Level 8 honours degree, or equivalent prior learning that is recognised by the University as meeting this requirement.
