The purpose of this MicroCred is to develop students understanding of the range of laboratory based activities in psychology and to provide opportunities for students to undertake practical studies in psychology and in so doing develop students ability to collect, code and analyse empirical data.
The modules will provide you with an understanding of the range of laboratory-based activities in psychology. Students will obtain experience in collecting, coding, analysing and presenting empirical data. Students will engage in lab-based practical classes in order to develop expertise in conducting research in psychology. This will involve increasing familiarity with SPSS for coding of data and introduction of inferential statistics.
The module will be delivered online (E-learning) and it will have lab and fieldwork, independent reading, which will instill knowledge, encourage creativity, collaboration through online fieldwork and experiments. Students will learn about taking responsibility for their own learning through independent reading and enhanced articulation through their assessments.
Students will be required to analyse and write up data reports in private study time.
Student Weekly Time Commitment: 2-3 hours
Assessment
Assessment on the module is via coursework, in the form of two written assignments. Students must write two reports on research which will be undertaken during the semester
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Recall basic research methodologies that are used in psychology
- Identify the most suitable statistical test for several psychological research designs
- Discuss the strengths of a within groups design.
- Differentiate a between groups design from a within groups design.
- Value the strengths of qualitative research methods
- Display a professional commitment to research integrity
- Execute several statistical analyses using SPSS
- Design a between group experiment
Please note completing PS3021 Practical and Research Psychology 1 is a pre-requisite to entering this course.
Mature learners, leaving certificate or higher and those interested in psychology or switching into a psychology career. Learners will need to have access to a computer/laptop as they will need to download SPSS software to work on the programme.
