ORIENTATION DAYRoom CG-055, University of Limerick Campus

The Physics Department hosted its annual Orientation Day on the 6th of September 2024 in Room CG-055. This engaging event welcomed 17 new students to the University of Limerick's physics community.

Attendees had the opportunity to meet and interact with the department's esteemed faculty, including Dr. Ian Clancy, Dr. Robert Lynch, Prof. Tofail Syed, Dr. Ehthsam, and C.T.O. Maria Quinn, as well as the ever-supportive Physics Department Coordinator, Lauraine Howley.

The event featured an introduction to the exciting academic and research opportunities available within the department, a tour of the campus facilities, and a lively Q&A session that set an enthusiastic tone for the upcoming academic year.

The Physics Department extends a warm welcome to the incoming students and wishes them success in their journey at the University of Limerick.

The Physics Department at the University of Limerick is excited to announce two innovative programs launched in September 2024:

  • Energy Science and Engineering - MSc
    Explore advanced concepts in energy systems, sustainable technologies, and engineering solutions to tackle global energy challenges.
  • Energy Science and Engineering - Postgraduate Diploma
    A comprehensive diploma designed for those seeking foundational expertise in energy science, offering pathways to further academic pursuits or industry roles.

TRAVEL GRANT - EUROPEAN CERAMIC SOCIETY BURSARY

🌟 Hema Dinesh Barnana Receives European Ceramic Society Bursary! 🌟

Hema Dinesh Barnana, a postgraduate student in the Physics Department and a member of the YES Bernal group at the Bernal Institute, University of Limerick, has been awarded the prestigious Journal of European Ceramic Society (JECS) Trust Travel Grant! 🎉

Selected as one of the top 30 recipients worldwide by the European Ceramic Society (ECerS), this grant will support Hema’s participation in the 88th Annual Session of the Indian Ceramic Society and International Conference on Advanced Ceramics for Sustainability, taking place from November 28th to 30th, 2024, at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, Chennai, India.

Hema will present his groundbreaking research on lead-free sustainable piezoelectric ceramics, contributing to the global push for eco-friendly materials in advanced technology. 🌍🔬

ANNUAL HALLOWEEN EVENT – HOCUS POCUS, EDI FOCUS

🎃 The Department of Physics, University of Limerick, hosted a spook-tacular Halloween event that brought fun, laughter, and community spirit to life!

With eerie decorations, creative costumes, and activities like a Table Quiz, a Halloween Fancy Dress Competition, and, of course, delicious pizza, the event was a huge hit.

Congratulations to Team "The Schrödinger's Cats" for taking home the Table Quiz trophy! 🏆

A massive thank you to:

SCIENCE WEEK 2024

As part of Science Week 2024, the Department of Physics, University of Limerick, proudly participated in the festival to inspire and engage with the community. Held at the bustling Milk Market in Limerick, our Physics Busking event was a highlight, drawing enthusiastic crowds eager to explore the wonders of physics and STEM.

This year’s Science Week focused on fostering curiosity and innovation, encouraging schools and educational institutions to organize STEM-related projects and competitions. Our event showcased engaging experiments, interactive discussions, and hands-on activities, promoting Science Communication and strengthening our EPE (Education and Public Engagement) efforts.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in organizing and participating in this fantastic event. Together, we brought science to life for the next generation of physicists and innovators!

Physics Departmental Meeting / Luncheon

Date:  17th December 2024

To complete the annual year 2024, the Department of Physics had their department meeting, followed by luncheon at the Terrace Café. 
Professor Noel Buckley cited beautiful poetry, which set the tone for the Christmas season of goodwill.

Milford Seasonal Music Events

Venue: Milford Chapel

 

Throughout the Christmas holiday season, Milford Hospice have organised musical events to be held for the residents and their families.

 

On the 11th December, Lauraine Howley represented the physics department, joining the community choir in Milford chapel to sing O'Holy Night. Thanks Lauraine for spreading the Christmas cheer!

Tyndall Lecture

Date: 6th February 2025

Venue: AD2-010, Analog Devices Building, UL Campus

The Department of Physics, University of Limerick is delighted to host a Tyndall lecture on behalf of the Institute of Physics (IOP). The department is excited to welcome Dr Clara Nellist, a particle physicist with CERN, and enthusiastic science communicator. Clara is well known for her fantastic and accessible physics videos on TikTok, Instagram and Youtube.

The lecture, titled The Building Blocks of the Universe, will run for two sessions:

  1. 10:00am - 11:00am 
  2. 12:00pm - 01:00pm
