UL Doctoral College is running a second year of lunch-time seminars for Postgraduate Researchers (PGRs) around the theme of ‘Open Science’ arranging five extended lunch slots (from 12.30pm to 2pm) across the 2024/25 academic year.
Open science is a movement aimed at making scientific research, data, and dissemination accessible to all levels of society. The goal is to enhance transparency, reproducibility, and inclusivity in science.
Many funding agencies and institutions now require or encourage open science practices and being proficient in these practices can make doctoral candidates more competitive for grants and job opportunities.
UL PGRs are therefore asked to share their experiences with elements of open science and this might include publishing in open access journals, using reprint servers, data sharing and data management plans, open source software, reproducible workflows, transparent peer review, public involvement, open educational resources and open science communities.
At each lunch seminar, two PGRs will present their research (in no more than 7 minutes and 3 slides, with the first two slides summarising the research topic and the remaining slide discussing how they have considered Open Science).
The first presentation at each lunch seminar will start at 12.30pm and the second at 12.45pm. Lunch will then be available for all in attendance and provide an opportunity to connect informally.
