Biography

Dr Liz Kingston is an Associate Professor A in Nursing, Department of Nursing and Midwifery, at the University of Limerick, Ireland. Liz is the Post-graduate Course Director of the Master of Science in Infection Prevention and Control Leadership programme and the Certificate in Nursing (Nurse/Midwife Prescribing) Programme. She is Senior Clinical Skills Coordinator. In 2023 Liz and the clinical skills team were awarded a faculty teaching excellence award in pedagogic support.

She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma), an international community of nurses, dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, teaching, learning, and service through the cultivation of communities of practice, education, and research. She sits on the Governance Committee of the Omega Epsilon Chapter at Large in Ireland as a Counsellor Officer.

Liz is a member of the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) and is a member of the Research and Development committee, where she holds the Grants Coordinator Officer post. She is the Education Branch Officer of IPS Ireland branch.
She is a member of the Health Research Institute (HRI) and Health Implementation Science and Technology (HIST) cluster at University of Limerick.

Liz holds a PhD from the School of Education, University of Limerick, a MSc in Education and Training Management from the School of Education, Dublin City University, a Post-graduate Diploma in Nurse Education and a Bachelors Nursing degree from University College Dublin.

Research Interests


Research interest areas include infection prevention and control, innovative pedagogy, simulation and research capacity building. The focus of much of Liz's research is on infection prevention and control (IPC) and she has a long track record of success in leading funded research projects in this field. Funders include the Health Service Executive, Infection Prevention Society, National Digital Learning Repository and University of Limerick. She dovetails her interest in IPC research with her interest in innovative pedagogy and project successes include the design and development of an IPC virtual gaming tool prototype for healthcare students, the design and development of multiple video-based IPC resources for healthcare students.

The focus of her doctoral studies was on the field of IPC, specifically exploring hand hygiene knowledge, attitudes and practices of healthcare professionals and healthcare students. Liz has published extensively in the field of IPC and presents widely at prestigious international IPC conferences. In recent times she has effectively communicated her research relating to IPC and public health measures and guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic, via media platforms such as Ireland's national TV and radio broadcaster, regional radio broadcasters and national newspapers. She is a member of the international editorial team of the Journal of Hospital Infection and the American Journal of Infection Control and regularly reviews journal publications relating to IPC for other journals.
