University of Limerick has appointed a new adjunct professor to its Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, it has been announced.

Paul Kelleher, Vice President of Engineering for QT Technologies Ireland Limited (Qualcomm Ireland), has been appointed to the role in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Paul will also be working in collaboration with Lero Research Ireland Centre for Software, which is based at UL.

The strategic appointment underscores UL's commitment to fostering industry-academic collaboration, developing research opportunities and enhancing the educational experience for its students.

Paul graduated from UL with a Bachelor of Engineering in 1992 and has more than 30 years’ experience of working in the electronics industry.

Based in Cork, Paul drove the creation of the first design team as both the team lead and design manager at Qualcomm. The team now consists of more than 500 engineers.

Professor Patrick Healy, Head of Department of Computer Science and Information Systems said: “The appointment of Paul as an Adjunct Professor recognises his decades of achievements in industry, both in Ireland and abroad. Paul’s story is one that should resonate and inspire our undergraduates, postgraduates and faculty alike, and demonstrates the key strengths of resilience and adaptability in his journey to date.

“As a graduate of University of Limerick, it is fitting to appoint Paul to this position.”

In his role as an Adjunct Professor, Paul will engage with students and researchers through guest lectures, workshops, and collaborative research projects. His expertise will be instrumental in guiding research on the latest developments in the sector.

Paul said he was honoured to join University of Limerick as an Adjunct Professor.

“This was a full circle moment for me, having graduated from University of Limerick. It is an honour to be an Adjunct Professor at UL, and I’m very grateful to Patrick Healy, Norelee Kennedy, Kenneth Stanton, Lionel Briand, Padraig Costello and the team at Lero. I will remember this day for a long time to come.”

UL continues to attract leading professionals from various industries, reinforcing its position as a hub for innovation and excellence in teaching and research.

The addition of Paul Kelleher to the faculty is a testament to UL's dedication to providing students with a dynamic and industry-relevant learning environment.

Following his graduation with a BEng from UL, Paul has been at the forefront of technology advances and collaboration with academia in the electronics industry.

He joined QT Technologies Ireland Limited in 2015 as the first Global System-on-Chip (SoC) Engineer, having previously worked for Cypress Semi, Powervation, Freescale/Motorola, Canon Australia, S3 (Philips) with roles as Chip Lead, Design Manager, DigRF System Architecture, MIPI Member, Front End and Back End Designer.

He has strong track record in constructing the new teams, leadership, and technical contributions to Global SoC projects and site-related work (Recruitment, Finance, Legal, Logistics).

Paul is also Chair of the Southern Region of the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland.
