The Explorers team will take you on a journey down to the seashore where they discover some of the coolest seashell creatures. Learn what seashells are bivalves and which ones are gastropods, how they survive the harsh environment, and what they like to eat!

Noirin tells us all about the seashell treasures along the upper shoreline. She also makes a discovery - which looks like a seashell but it’s not! Anna finds some of the tiniest periwinkles and top shells with the coolest spirals feasting on seaweeds in the rockpools in the middle shore. Padraic also finds his way to the lower shore hunting down the carnivore dog whelk that loves to make limpets into soup!

10am  Ages 13 – 15, 12 noon  Ages 16 to 18

In this workshop we will use digital turntables and "fruit-pianos" to control synthesizers and music software and make music by numbers! 

Details: In this 45 minute workshop faculty from the Digital Media and Arts Research Centre (dmarc.ul.ie) will introduce novel ways of creating rhythms based on the Euclidean Algorithm. Participants will work with pens and paper, custom hardware and software, and music synthesisers to create music.

What is it about: This event will detail how sport and nutrition science can help inform your exercise and dietary practices to maintain optimal health and performance in our daily lives. The session will specifically focus on workplace or educational health.

Brendan Maher – Three time All Ireland and All Star winning hurler with Tipperary, Brendan now works as an Associate Director with Teneo Performance

Naomi Carroll – Olympian and Irish International hockey player who recently qualified for the upcoming World Cup, Naomi also works in Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh as a Coding and Maths teacher.

Enda Lynch – Head of Enterprise for Munster rugby and Independent Director of the Federation of Irish Sport, Enda has led Munster’s High Performance Leadership programme in partnership with the University of Limerick as well as Munster’s new e-sports team in recent years.

Dr Catherine Norton – Former Performance Nutritionist with Munster Rugby and Limerick GAA, Dr Norton is currently a Lecturer in performance Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Limerick where she also works with Munster’s High Performance Leadership programme.

Host: Dr Brian Carson – Former Clare and Limerick GAA coach, Dr Carson is a Senior lecturer in Exercise Physiology at the University of Limerick where he also works with Munster’s High Performance Leadership programme.

What is Fantastic DNA in a Box?
The Fantastic DNA in a Box workshop is a remote DNA extraction session that can be run by teachers in the classroom without the physical presence of demonstrators.
Through the use of pre-packaged materials (provided by UL), video instructions and online support, teachers can set up this session with ease and run the session either alone guided by videos or through an online live workshop session with Cell Explorers Presenters. Sessions for the live workshop sessions to be booked through Audrey.O’Grady@ul.ie

CONFIRM, the SFI research Centre for smart manufacturing, University of Limerick is opening its doors to primary school pupils and teachers during Science Week.

The i4 Experience consists of a tour of the CONFIRM production labs where pupils and teachers will see technologies such as robotics, virtual reality and 3D printing in action. Visitors will then get the opportunity to travel through the 4 industrial revolutions in the CONFIRM Immersive Cave before completing a robotics workshop lead by our researchers.

Please note that this festival of events is a hybrid model of both online and physical events. All physical events will run in line with government public health advice.
