Sensors are ubiquitous today. Whether in our homes or stores, in our cars, in the aeroplanes that we travel in or most evidently in our smartphones – they are an increasingly important presence in our modern world. Sensors and sensor systems underpin the Internet of Things (IoT) which focuses on configuration, control and networking via the Internet of devices or ‘Things’ that are traditionally not associated with the Internet. The excellent measurements that modern sensor systems provide enable us not only to observe the world around us, but (at least in part) to control our environment and without high quality measurement tools, we cannot create the control systems we need – we require good measurement for the control systems that are built to exploit the advanced sensor systems developed.
The field is global and worth an estimated $200 billion annually – and more when both software and hardware aspects of the field are considered. ‘Smart sensors’ are an increasing share of that market and with the development of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning tools, will continue to develop and to offer more to the user and the consumer.
This Conference builds on the heritage of the successful series of ‘Sensors & their Applications’ Conferences, first held in 1983 and reflects the changing landscape since then. It is organized by the Institute of Measurement & Control (InstMC), with the support of the Institute of Physics (IoP), the China Instrument & Control Society (CIS), the Optical Fibre Sensors Committee (OFSC) of China Optical Engineering Society, and incorporating the 5th International Conference for Fibre-optic and Photonic Sensors for Industrial and Safety Applications (OFSIS). The Conference aims to bring both researchers and instrument developers and users together from across the world to discuss the latest developments in and directions for the field.
The Conference looks to accept original, high-quality contributions from all relevant fields of the highly topical and multi-disciplinary subject of measurement, sensors, and associated instrumentation. The conference will cover:
- practical developments of sensors and sensor systems ‘in the field’
- a wide range of application areas, with an emphasis on both applied and theoretical aspects.
Submissions are invited on:
- all aspects of the theory, research, development, manufacturing and applications of the science, engineering and technology of the highly interdisciplinary field that comprises sensors, sensor systems and their applications today
- results of research embracing both simulation and experimental work, which may deal with practical or new industrial applications related to innovative sensors
- new developments in sensor design, including modelling, and
- the applications of sensors to novel research in different areas of instrumentation.
- Of particular interest are recent developments in the field, including:
- sensors for Industry 4.0 and Digital Twins
- sensor data fusion
- sensors and machine learning and Artificial Intelligence
- sensor use and evaluation in industry including sensor packaging, sensor durability and long-term testing and evaluation
- education and training in sensors and sensor systems and health and safety aspects of the use of sensor systems.

Publication of the Conference material. Accepted extended abstracts will be published on the Conference website. Further, a selection of the best accepted papers will be invited to submit full articles to the Journal Measurement: Sensors, published by Elsevier, for a Special Issue dedicated to the innovation in sensors and systems.
An interesting and historic venue. The Conference will be a face-to-face event enabling delegates to come together in person in the historic city of Limerick, founded by Scandinavian settlers in the year 812, during the Viking Age. Limerick is the third-most populous urban area in the Republic of Ireland, and the fourth-most populous city on the island of Ireland. The city straddles the River Shannon, with the historic core of the city located on King's Island, which is bounded by the Shannon and Abbey Rivers. Limerick is at the head of the Shannon Estuary, where the river widens before it flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
In 2014, Limerick became Ireland's inaugural National City of Culture, with a variety of artistic and cultural events occurring at locations around the city throughout the year. It offers great opportunities for tourism for those who can stay on for a few days after the Conference.
