The University of Limerick’s Department of Mathematics and Statistics will host the 2025 International Workshop on Statistical Modelling (IWSM) at the Strand Hotel in Limerick from Sunday, July 13th, to Friday, July 18th.

The IWSM is the world’s premier workshop dedicated to statistical modelling and is a key event of the Statistical Modelling Society, a global network of experts in the field. Now in its 39th year, the workshop will highlight cutting-edge developments in statistical modelling and data science, with a focus on tackling real-world challenges.

Associate Professor Kevin Burke, Chair of the workshop, expressed his excitement about bringing IWSM to Limerick: “We are incredibly proud to host the International Workshop on Statistical Modelling this July. This is only the second time in its 40-year history that the event has come to Ireland, with the last being in Galway almost 20 years ago. Winning the bid for this prestigious conference is a testament to the international reputation of our department and the MACSI research group at UL.”

The scientific programme will feature prominent speakers, including Brendan Murphy (Ireland) on data linkage methods, Ruth King (UK) on ecological statistics, Sonja Greven (Germany) on modern regression techniques, Daniel Durante (Italy) on modelling criminal networks, and Cynthia Rudin (USA) on interpretable machine learning. Additionally, Ewout Steyerberg (Netherlands) will lead a short course on evaluating prediction models and AI algorithms.

In addition to the scientific programme, attendees will enjoy a rich social itinerary that showcases Limerick’s highlights. Events include a welcome reception at Treaty City Brewery on Monday, July 14th, a poster reception at the Strand Hotel on Tuesday, July 15th, excursions to the Cliffs of Moher and Limerick’s Medieval Quarter on Wednesday, July 16th, and a conference dinner at House Restaurant on Thursday, July 17th. Daily lunches will be provided in the Strand Hotel’s award-winning River Restaurant, offering further networking opportunities.

The call for papers is now open, with deadlines on February 17th for contributed talks and March 28th for poster presentations.
