On Tuesday, 19 September 2023, the University of Limerick witnessed the launch of Cohort One of the Global Leadership for Sustainable Development (GLSD) programme. With 21 students hailing from 13 different home institutions across Asia, Europe, and North America, Cohort One embarked on a transformative journey to deepen their understanding of sustainable development and become agents of change in their communities.
The launch event for Cohort One of GLSD was marked by enthusiasm and anticipation as students from diverse cultural backgrounds came together to embark on a shared mission of sustainability. From study abroad and Erasmus students to full-degree seekers, each participant brought a unique perspective to the table, enriching the collaborative learning experience. Students were introduced to the GLSD programme, learned the core fundamentals of sustainability's history, institutions, and metrics, and engaged in a speed-friending exercise to meet one another.
Throughout the six-week programme, Cohort One of GLSD will engage in a series of immersive learning experiences aimed at exploring systemic approaches and challenges to sustainability. They will participate in lectures, debates, and discussions led by expert guest speakers, both on-campus and through site visits. Additionally, students will work in interdisciplinary teams to co-create student-led sustainability projects to be implemented on campus, fostering innovation and collaboration.
As Cohort One of GLSD embarks on their journey towards sustainability, they are poised to become catalysts for positive change in their respective communities. Through their collective efforts and dedication to sustainability principles, they aim to address pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges, driving meaningful impact on a global scale.
