On Wednesday, November 01, 2023, Rabiya Ali joined our Conversation Series to shed light on Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) - Gender Equality. With her extensive experience as a Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Manager at TUS, Rabiya discussed her work in various community and advocacy organisations across the Mid-West of Ireland.
Throughout her career, Rabiya has been actively involved in initiatives aimed at preventing violence against women. From her roles at Ascend Domestic Abuse Service (NTDC) to her consultancy work with international organisations like the Council of Europe and the UN's International Organisation for Migration, Rabiya has been at the forefront of promoting gender equality and empowering women.
During the session, participants explored the multifaceted nature of gender-based violence and discussed strategies to address it effectively. Rabiya's insights provided valuable perspectives on the importance of creating safe and inclusive environments for women and girls, aligning with the objectives of SDG 5.
By engaging in conversations like these, we can collectively work towards eliminating all forms of discrimination and violence against women and girls, and fostering a more equitable and just society.
The UL Student Sustainability Conversation Series invites exceptional individuals to speak to students in the University about their professional and personal experiences, centrally themed around a UN Sustainable Development Goal. We do this to showcase to students the fantastic real-life work that takes place around us in advancing economic, environmental, and/or social sustainability, while providing students with worldviews and perspectives that inspire and challenge perceptions around effective sustainable development.
