On October 4th, 2023, UL Student Sustainability hosted a captivating panel discussion centred around Sustainable Development Goal 1: No Poverty. Moderated by Emer Fallon, this event brought together students from various backgrounds and disciplines to explore the multifaceted aspects of poverty and discuss potential solutions.
SDG 1 aims to eradicate poverty in all its forms worldwide by 2030. It recognises that poverty is more than just a lack of income; it encompasses access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, education, and healthcare. Addressing poverty requires a comprehensive approach that considers economic, social, and environmental factors.
The panel discussion featured students from the Economics, Enactus, and Environmental societies, each offering unique perspectives on poverty alleviation. From examining economic policies and market-based solutions to exploring grassroots initiatives and social entrepreneurship, the panellists provided valuable insights into tackling poverty from diverse angles.
The event underscored the importance of incorporating different viewpoints and expertise when addressing complex sustainability issues like poverty. By bringing together students with varying backgrounds and interests, the panel discussion facilitated rich dialogue and encouraged critical thinking. It highlighted the interconnected nature of poverty with other SDGs, emphasising the need for holistic approaches to sustainable development.
Overall, the student panel discussion on SDG 1 served as a catalyst for meaningful conversations and collaboration, demonstrating the power of diverse perspectives in driving positive change. As students continue to engage with sustainability issues, events like these play a crucial role in fostering empathy, understanding, and collective action towards building a more equitable and prosperous world.
