The University pioneered the development of European Studies at the undergraduate level in Ireland and launched the first MA in European Integration. It is a mark of the high regard in which the University is held by the European Union that it has received funding for four Jean Monnet Chairs in the area of European integration. The Centre for European Studies was designated a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence in 1999. It now incorporates the Euro-Asia Research Group headed by Prof. Bernadette AndrĂ©osso-O'Callaghan.

There can be little doubt that the Brexit decsion in the UK has created a new situation in Irelnd in which knowledge about the EU and its member states (including their languages and cultural) is becoming increasingly more important. The University of Limerick is continuing to respond to these changes. This website aims to inform not only about the reserach activities of the two Jean Monnet Chairs currently active in UL, but also about the teaching activties in the field of European Studies at UL as well as about the wide range of EU-funded projects currently running in the four faculties and the EU-related activities of UL Global, specifically those funded by the ERASMUS+ programme. This website presents UL as a highly Europeanized environment, evidence of the continuing spirit driving the founding of UL's predecessor, NIHE Limerick, which was set up in 1972 in prepararion for Ireland's accession to the EEC the following year.
