With 30 years of experience in Life Sciences, Barry Regan has led large organisations in the global medical device and pharmaceutical industries through significant scaling and transformational change efforts.

Originally from Ballyhaunis, County Mayo, Barry graduated from University of Limerick in 1994 with a Bachelor of Technology Degree.

Barry’s career began as a co-op student in a healthcare/medical device company, where he later joined as a graduate. He spent five years working for Abbott in Ireland, an experience that offered many travel opportunities and influenced his decision to move to the US 25 years ago.

In Chicago, Barry broadened his career opportunities in the Pharma and MedTech Industry, travelling the world in increasingly senior roles across several divisions while completing his MBA at Lake Forest.

Another international move, and Barry’s career took him to the Caribbean, where he served as Vice President and General Manager of Abbvie Puerto Rico, and was a board member of the Pharmaceutical Industry Association. He then moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he spent five years as a Senior Vice President at Smith & Nephew and a Corporate Officer at Wright Medical.

Love awaited Stateside, and Barry met his wife Caroline in Chicago, and they recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary. Along with their son Colin, they have lived in four different cities. Barry is profoundly grateful for their support and understanding as he progressed through his career. Colin recently started college, studying pre-law at California Polytechnic.

Barry has maintained a tight circle of friends from his university days, and despite the years, they have stayed connected. The passing of one of their group, Fergus Coleman, a UL Engineering graduate from 1994, brought them even closer.

Four years ago, Barry began a new chapter in his career by moving to San Diego to join Dexcom as Executive Vice President of Global Operations. He oversees an organization of over 6,000 people and is responsible for the global expansion of Dexcom’s innovative Continuous Glucose Monitoring products.

Barry finds creative ways to connect the company mission, “Empower people to control their health,” with his employees, such as dedicating manufacturing lines to Dexcom Warriors—people with diabetes who inspire others through their advocacy work.

Despite living 5,000 miles away, Barry has been a strong advocate for Direct Foreign Investment into Ireland. He has partnered with the IDA on several publications and events promoting Ireland as a leading location for Life Sciences operations. His understanding of the value proposition that Ireland, particularly the West of Ireland, provides to MedTech influenced his decision to invest over 300 million euros in Athenry, County Galway. Last year, Barry announced that Dexcom would build a state-of-the-art manufacturing campus there, creating over 1,000 jobs over the next three years.

Barry is dedicated to putting his people and the communities they serve first. Committed to being an engaged member of the local community, he looked for opportunities to integrate with and support the local community.

Connacht Rugby had been seeking a commercial partner to help develop their new stadium, and their ambition, high-performance standards, and values aligned with Dexcom Ireland’s mission.

The 12-year naming rights partnership of “Dexcom Stadium” provides a significant boost to the West of Ireland and helps people learn about Dexcom and its values. This partnership aims to inspire people with diabetes, including those who play sports or participate in physical activities, to not let diabetes hold them back.

Dexcom has already recruited several UL graduates and postgraduates and is partnering with the school to fill the intern and graduate talent pipeline going forward.
