European gold medalists in the 4x400 mixed relay celebrating their win wrapped in Irish flags

UL alumni Thomas Barr and Sharlene Mawdsley, alongside teammates Rhasidat Adeleke and Chris O'Donnell, took home gold at the European Athletics Championships in Rome last weekend. Their triumph in the 4x400m mixed relay marked Ireland’s first gold medal at the event since Sonia O'Sullivan's victory in 1998.

Thomas Barr once again proved why he is so revered in Irish athletics, adding this gold to his 2018 European bronze in the 400m hurdles. Set to compete at his third Olympic Games in Paris this summer, he has said he will decide on retirement afterward. If this is his final year, he hopes to "go out with a bang"—and this victory might just be the start of it.

Ul graduate Sharlene Mawdsley has made remarkable strides in the 400m this past year. Coached by two-time Olympian Gary Ryan, Sharlene anchored the relay with an astounding 49.40-second leg, securing the gold. But her heroics didn't stop there - Sharlene also powered Ireland to a silver medal in the women's 4x400m relay, solidifying her status as a rising star in Irish athletics. Bound for her first Olympics this summer, she’s definitely one to watch.

With athlete Sarah Lavin also training regularly at UL, the entire campus community is buzzing with pride and excitement, eagerly looking forward to cheering on Thomas, Sharlene and our other athletes at the Olympics in Paris in August!

See why UL professor Orla Muldoon believes these positive female role models are likely to inspire a new generation of girls wanting to follow in their footsteps. Why successful Irish athletes are such a tonic for the nation (rte.ie)
