Gendered Effect of Well-Being on Likelihood of Violence in Northern Irish Adolescents, by Dr Megan Ryan and Dr Colm Walsh

An article by Dr Megan Ryan of the Research Evidence into Policy, Programmes and Practice (REPPP) team and Dr Colm Walsh, Queens University Belfast, has been published in the Youth Justice Journal.

Recent work has demonstrated a rise in female-related violence. Associations between mental health and violence are well established, but the gender-specific impact remains under-evaluated. This article explores how gender and well-being interact to affect likelihood of violence in a Northern Irish youth sample. Findings showed a moderating effect of gender. It also showed that the relationship between these factors is complex and requires further work into the mechanisms underlying this. It highlights the need for suitable measurement tools as well as further work examining the impact of gender-specific intervention programmes aimed at reducing youth violence.
