Research within the CCJVS explores issues pertaining to data retention and disclosure.

Data retention is considered to be an essential tool for investigating serious crime efficiently, but it is imperative that its use is guided by the need to protect fundamental rights and freedoms.

Given the significance of GDPR, the need to respect rights such as privacy, protection of personal data, non-discrimination and presumption of innocence are important to weigh in any discussion on criminal data.

Staff in this area research the retention and use of surveillance data, forensic information and criminal record information sharing and disclosure, from both a national and international perspective.
