This article explains the user synchronization process between the University of Limerick’s Student Information System (SIS) and Brightspace VLE.
What is the user synchronization process?
The user synchronization process ensures that the students and staff who are registered for a module in SIS are also enrolled in the corresponding Brightspace course. This means that you do not have to manually add or remove students or staff from your Brightspace courses once student registration is complete. It also means that your students can access the course materials, assessments, and feedback that you provide on Brightspace once the registration process is complete, and the site is made active.
How often does the user synchronization process run?
The user synchronization process runs every ~2 hours (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm) and updates the Brightspace enrolments based on the SIS data. Therefore, changes in SIS will be reflected in Brightspace based on the schedule above.
Please note that the user synchronization process does not affect the content or settings of your Brightspace courses. You can still customize your Brightspace courses as you wish.
What do I need to do to ensure the user synchronization process works smoothly?
To ensure that the user synchronization process works smoothly, please follow these steps:
- Please ensure your module is set up in SI Module Availability (cam_mav, cam_mavt) for the relevant academic year and semester.
- Please ensure that Academic Registry has the correct instructor details for your module.
Please note that the user synchronization process is paused at the end of the academic term to ensure that students do not lose access to Brightspace when they are preparing or doing exams. For example, SIS Semester 1 module enrolments are not automatically synchronised to the VLE after 30th November.
